What to expect at our IVF clinic - Buckhurst Hill

Even though everyone’s IVF experience will be different, a typical journey looks a little like this:

  • Referral – Either you, your GP, or a hospital doctor can provide a referral.
  • Pre-treatment – This will include a consultation, AMH blood test, vaginal ultrasound scan, and semen assessment.
  • Counselling – IVF is a significant emotional; journey, so we provide counselling every step of the way.
  • Pre-treatment appointment – A discussion of your treatment programme and the signing of consent forms.
  • Endometrial scratch – This is performed to help with the implantation of an embryo.
  • Treatment commences – Treatment starts on Day 1 of your period. We ask that you call the clinic on this day.
  • Ovarian stimulation and monitoring – We’ll show you how to inject drugs to stimulate your ovaries. Around two weeks later, we’ll conduct scans and blood tests.
  • Trigger injection – As soon as your follicles are ready, an injection is administered to mature the eggs.
  • Egg collection – This takes place 36-40 hours after the trigger injection in a procedure that takes about 30 minutes.
  • Providing sperm – Fresh sperm or thawed frozen samples should be provided on the same day as the eggs at our clinic.
  • Egg insemination – We will prepare the sample before insemination to ensure only the best sperm are used.
  • Embryo development – Our embryologists will communicate with you on almost a daily basis to provide development updates.
  • Embryo transfer – Using a thin catheter, we will deposit one or two embryos in the uterus with a small drop of culture medium.
  • Waiting – This two-week wait can be agonising, so please call us with any concerns you have.
  • Results – If you’re pregnant, we will schedule a scan before handing you back to your GP. If not, we will do everything in our power to help you move on and try again.
